The summer season is best spent enjoying the outdoors, basking in good weather, and spending quality time with family. Although this summer will look different due to the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions, there are many parts of summer that will remain the same — safety and crime prevention. Surrey RCMP would like to share some helpful tips to not only make this an enjoyable summer, but a safe one as well.
Property Crimes
The COVID-19 pandemic has left many families turning their vacations into staycations. As you continue to spend your summer at home, Surrey RCMP is reminding the public to remain vigilant of property crime thieves. Surrey RCMP’s Property Crime Target Team recommends locking your front doors and windows, and keeping garage doors closed, even if you are home and spending time in the backyard. It’s always a good idea to install security cameras on your property to capture any unwelcome activities occurring on your property. For more tips on home security, please visit our website.
Driving Safety
As the summer brings more people including children outside and onto their front yards for outdoor activities, Surrey RCMP asks drivers to be careful on the roads. Drivers are expected to know and follow all the rules of the road and pay extra attention while driving near playgrounds or streets where children are at play.
Impaired driving remains one of the top three contributing factors for fatal crashes in the province, according to ICBC. It has been noted that nearly half (42 percent) of impaired driving related deaths happen in the summer months (June—September) in BC. If your summer plans include the consumption of alcohol, ensure to plan ahead and arrange a safe ride home. Impaired driving is never an acceptable option — do not drink and drive. Our officers will continue to conduct proactive traffic enforcement throughout the summer for dangerous driving behaviour including impaired driving.

A valuable resource for parents that will continue its operations throughout the summer is the Surrey RCMP’s Parent Helpline. It is a dedicated phone line that provides guidance for parents/guardians who believe their child is involved or at risk of becoming involved in criminal activity.
