On April 24th I attended the District 5 all Block Watch Captains meeting on behalf of our team. Please see highlights from the various items discussed:
- Participants are encouraged to “Observe and Report”. If you see something suspicious call and report. If in progress or serious call 911, otherwise contact the non-emergency line.
- Captains are advised to share information from incidents with District 5 Block Watch Coordinator for tracking purposes which will help RCMP direct resources to highest crime areas
- Captains and Co-captains are not responsible to report crimes on behalf of their Block Watch participants.
- Captains, Co-captains, and participants are not responsible for patrolling neighborhoods
- Captains and Co-captains are not responsible for vacation house sitting.
- Residential Break and Enters in Wills Creek are very low, however of the Break and Enters committed in South Surrey District 5 year to date (YTD), 5% involved using garage door openers stolen from vehicles and approx 14% involved garage doors left open.
- Residents are encouraged to photocopy original Insurance papers and redact your address so if your car is broken into while you are away from home or on the street and your door opener is stolen, thieves will not be able to find out where you live. PLEASE DO NOT ALTER ORIGINAL DOCUMENTS
- Theft from autos are down YTD from last year (9% decrease) GOOD News!!
- Do not leave valuables in cars especially ID and passports. Canadian Passports are valuable and worth Approx $10K on the black market.
- Although winter is now behind us, just a reminder not to leave your vehicle running unattended while it is warming up. It is an offence and you most likely will be charged should this occur. The RCMP says leaving your vehicle running with the keys in the ignition is contravening Section 191(2)(a) of the Motor Vehicle Act, Unsecured Motor Vehicle, and carries a fine of $81. This violation ticket can be provided to the owner of the vehicle even if their vehicle has been stolen.
